On 30th March, 1917, the 2nd Leinster battalion of 73 Brigade, 24th Division moved into the front line trenches at Souchez, just to the north of Arras, where they remained until relieved on 4th April. George Cole died from wounds on 2nd April and it is likely that he was one of the 18 men wounded on 31st March when there was a heavy artillery barrage on the battalion’s positions.
